Paneer is now the most adulterated food in India.
For millions of vegetarians, paneer is their primary source of protein.
But according to a recent food safety survey in Noida and Greater Noida, 83% of paneer samples failed quality checks.
Even worse, 40% were found UNSAFE for consumption.
And this isn’t some isolated lab test.
These results came from over 2,700 inspections and 500+ raids.
Here’s what they found in these fake paneer samples:
- Starch: Used to bulk up paneer. It can cause bloating, indigestion, and offers almost no nutrition.
- Synthetic milk + Detergents: Linked to vomiting, stomach cramps, and long-term organ damage.
- Urea / Caustic soda: Highly toxic. Damages the kidneys and liver over time.
- Formalin: A preservative used to increase shelf life. It’s a known carcinogen.
- Powdered milk solids: Makes paneer cheaper, but robs it of all natural nutrients.
I find this alarming,
because this isn’t about taste.
It’s about your gut, liver, kidneys, and long-term health.
So what can you do?
✔️ Buy paneer only from trusted dairy brands — not unlabelled sources or loose blocks from unknown vendors.
✔️ Test at home: Boil a small piece. If it smells weird or breaks apart, it’s likely fake.
✔️ Look for texture: Real paneer is soft and crumbly, not rubbery or overly firm.
Nobody should have to second-guess the safety of what’s on their plate.
Especially not something as common — and trusted — as paneer.
